Abstract : According to BOINC founder and professor at UC Berkeley, BOINC, the father of distributed computing and idea source of Bitcoin infrastructure, will migrate its infrastructure to Blockchain to promote the ecosystem of computing resource sharing by leveraging the token economy. Once implemented, this will become the massive real-world blockchain application this year.

ChinaDD exclusively learned BOINC, the largest computing grid in the world, will initiate its infrastructure migration to g blockchain. The project could become the most massive blockchain adoption in 2019 once it goes live.
BOINC, with the full name of Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, was founded in 2003. It used to be the earliest and most popular distributed computing network with the broadest user base before Bitcoin came out. It was previously known as SETI@home, a project to utilize the idle computing power of personal computers around the world to analyze massive data from radio telescopefield and to search signals from alien civilization. Such global distributed computing network is also considered as the original inspiration for Bitcoin’s distributed network.
In his interview with ChainDD and its parent TMTpost Group, a China’s leading media & technology information service provider, David Anderson, BOINC’s founder and research scientist at the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, said both BONIC and blockchain are based on distributing computing grid and possess huge computing power. In his view, BONIC became popular in computer technology field as early as 2003. Bitcoin’s whitepaper, which as released in November 2018, inherited many ideas from BONIC in terms of distributed computing and incentive mechanism.
Anderson plans to use blockchain technology to further promote BONIC’s growth and turn BOINC into a peer-to-peer (P2P) network that delivers distributed communication, computation and storage. In that way, allocation of computing tasks can be accomplished by smart contracts. Moving the transaction data to blockchain will create significant growth system for BONIC’ community and network.
In the meantime, a blockchain-based and token-powered incentive system will offer a disciplined environment to engage more community members for their computing power contribution.
“As part of the consensus mechanism of blockchain, Proof-of-work (PoW) is not a meaningless hash function but a useful computation. Currently, there is a Gridcoin based reward system. I think it’s a good way to reward current volunteers and attract new volunteers. It can double the volunteer base, or even increase a hundredfold, thus creating a higher level of computing capacity and impact many scientific areas. ” Anderson told ChainDD.
Anderson also revealed he will find appropriate partners in different global markets to transform and expand BONIC.
